Act IV, Scene 1

1. Paris tells Friar Lawrence that Lord Capulet wants the marriage to happen on Thursday. What is Friar’s response?
2. What reasons does Paris give for Lord Capulet’s insistence on marrying Juliet so quickly?
3. What is your opinion of Paris when he asks Juliet why she’s there and “do not deny to him that you love me.”
4. Juliet originally told the nurse she was going to confession. However, here she reveals exactly why she came to see Friar. Why did she?
5. Reread lines 77-88 spoken by Juliet. Paraphrase them in your own words. What is the mood she creates here?
6. What plan does the Friar set out? Give the step by step plan they’ll follow.

Act IV, Scene 2

1. What does Juliet tell her father when she returns from Friar Lawrence’s cell? Explain everything she tells him.
2. Because of this, what does Lord Capulet decide to do?
3. How does Juliet say she addressed Paris when she saw him at Friar Lawrence's? How is this appropriate for Juliet to respond?

Act IV, Scene 3

1. After the Nurse and her mother leave, Juliet almost calls the Nurse back again. Why doesn’t she? How does this show that Juliet has matured since the beginning of the play?
2. If the potion does not work, what is Juliet’s plan? (Hint, look at the scene directions in parenthesis.)
3. Juliet is a little fearful and a little suspicious. What suspicion about the Friar does she voice? What other fears does she express about this plan? List them all

Act IV, Scene 5

1. Who discovers Juliet?
2. How do the Capulet’s react to Juliet’s death?
3. Look at how each of these characters reacts to Juliet's death: Nurse, Lady Capulet, Paris. Does their grief seem sincere? Why or why not?
3. How does the Friar try to comfort them?
4. The next bit between Peter and the musicians seems to be for “comic relief.” How do you suppose the scene is supposed to function in the play?

ACT IV Summary and Review
A. Friar Lawrence devises a plan to help Juliet avoid marrying Paris in Act IV. Why do you think he and Juliet are willing to take such desperate actions rather than making her marriage to Romeo public? (5 line minimum)
